Discovering the Green Lantern Inn, in Van Reenen stirred unadulterated delight. This joy was marred by irritation and disappointment. How could we have missed this gem before?! We travel the Johannesburg / Durban route at least four times a year. I don’t even remember passing the Green Lantern signpost previously, so daft as the establishment has been around for well over 100 years. I have an aversion to petrol station complexes offering boring chain food. Stopping at Green Lantern Inn provided not only good food but a unique experience. What a way to start a holiday before the destination, or ease the pain of returning home after a great trip.
It’s hard to remain grumpy when you walk into a character rich reception area, to be greeted by a lady in an Easter Bunny Onesie (It was Easter Sunday), with a Charlie Chaplin movie playing on a big screen complete with chipper piano music.
The last thread of irritation snapped on walking into the bar to find a donkey alongside the barman behind the counter.
We enjoyed a delightful lunch and while waiting for our meal, our children played in the play area set in beautiful gardens.
We shall return for another road trip meal stop, ideally I would love to spend a night.
Love places like this – we make a point of visiting Padstalle
