The Secret History

The Secret History has been on my reading list for a few years since my husband recommended it.  I have also seen it on a few top 100 book lists and it is most deserving to be there.  I was a little apprehensive when I saw that the book is dedicated to Bret Easton Ellis as ‘American Psycho’ is my most hated book, he may be smart and to some funny but I felt befouled after finishing the book despite skim reading the last 100 pages or so.  In my mind there has to be something seriously wrong with someone who can even imagine the stuff in that book.  When I was done with American Psycho I ripped it up and binned it, not wanting it polluting my home.  I have never before destroyed a book.  Anyway I digress.

‘The secret History is brilliant!  It starts with reference to a murder, the first half describes the events leading up to the murder and the 2nd half what follows.  The story centres around 5 college students at Camden College (which is a fictitious college where Easton Ellis set his book ‘The Rules of Attraction’),  The book is dark yet enlightening.

I don’t want to go into too much regarding the content as I dislike spoilers, you just have to read it.

Never before has a book invaded my dreams but this one often did, I dreamed about the book several times sometimes when next picking it up it was at first hard to separate my dreams from what I had read the day before.  I know that I will be thinking of the characters and events for a long time to come.

  1. I loved this book as well – it was recommended to me by a friend who reads little, but carefully. She also recommended a book called Gold Coast by Nelson DeMille – her only other recommendation – and it was also brilliant.

  2. Must put this on my reading list…I love the genre and it seems promising!
