I remember The Waffle House when it was still The Teahouse of the Blue Lagoon. In my school days it was already an institution. My son Fjord can only eat home-made waffles made with Orgran ‘No Egg’ as his is allergic to eggs. It is not fair to go a-wafflin’ when he cannot partake. We were prepared to block our ears to the siren song of The Waffle House and forgo its famous delights, until I read an advertisement for The Waffle House. They offer egg free, gluten-free and dairy free options waffle options. I have never come across this before. Children with allergies so often feel like outcasts, occasions such as birthday parties are difficult. Restaurants can be downright dangerous.
We braved the holiday season queue (which moved quite quickly) and were rewarded with a real treat. Sweet waffles make a very decadent lunch but Fjord said that his choc chip waffle was his best lunch ever. The Waffle House does offer an array of lovely sounding savory waffles but they were all over R70 which was a bit pricey for us, as it was 3 waffles and 2 cokes came in just shy of R200.
The lovely setting of The Waffle House and the waffles make it a must if you are visiting the Natal South Coast (Hibiscus Coast).
