We popped into Lanzerac wine estate for a tasting. They also sell very yummy chocolate truffles which are paired with the wines. The estate is one of the oldest and was founded in 1691. The estate now falls under the SFW (Stellenbosch Farmers Winery) umbrella so is corporately owned, I do prefer the family estates but the atmosphere at Lanzerac was warm and friendly. Often staff look a bit sniffy when they see small children in tow, it was heartwarming when the children were invited to play in the water feature and fountain.
Mark filled us in on some history and general info. Lanzerac were one of the pioneer estates with Pinotage which is my favorite red varietal. In 1961 a 1959 Cape Champion Pinotage from Bellevue Estate was marketed under the Lanzerac brand.
We didn’t have a look at the hotel and spa but apparently it has been frequented by the rich and famous, including Bobby Kennedy.
