Some fun and a little life lesson from Snowflake and Barbie

I don’t do instant!  Instant coffee blasphemes the bean.  Instant meals and cakes are unconscionable.  My grandfather and great grandfather were master bakers and owned Pockets Tea Room (Bakery) in Salisbury (now Harare).  Baking is a tactile passion for me.  I shudder at the thought of instant cake mix.

At the SA Mom Blogs #JoziMeetUp my exciting goodie bag contained a Snowflake Barbie instant Cup Cake kit.  5 Year old Acacia, unpacked this with glee.  Past glimpses of these in supermarkets inspired hand tugging pleas from Acacia, met by a steely “NO” from me.  I’m not a big fan of Barbie either.

Baking the Barbie cupcakes with my little girl I felt joy laced with chagrin.  They were fun to make, quick, easy and pretty.  I confess they even tasted good.  Most importantly Acacia was enamoured.  This was precious mother, daughter time.  The lesson for me was to let go of rigid, stick-in-the-mud dogma and loosen up.  Saying “YES” to fun new things is liberating.  “NO” is such a door-slamming word.

Thanks to Snowflake for cheerful fun and a little life lesson.

  1. Those look beautiful

  2. Glad you enjoyed them! I don’t normally buy the premixes either but based on the great Snowflake ones we had I went with the pancake mix when I needed it and it also came out well.
