Bud’s Bay Shack, yummy food, mangroves, awesome view and more

Bay Shack Cliff at Bay ShackOver the years Cliff has often mentioned that he would love to visit The Prawn Shak in Amatikulu (about 100km from Durban) where you can enjoy what sounds like an idyllic meal on the beach.  This remains very much on our wish list.  On Saturday he discovered that there is a branch in Bayhead.

After a morning on Umdloti beach we decided to head to Bud’s on the Bay (soon to be renamed Bayshak) for lunch.  On arriving the setting told me that this was a fine choice.  Seating on the shaded deck looks over mangrove trees and the bay.  We almost didn’t order food as there is not a kids menu and the most child friendly option, chicken strips are coated in egg which Fjord is allergic to.  Selfishly I could not tear myself away.  I ordered Nacho’s (R50) and a plate of chips to share with the children.  The chips were unusually good (restaurant chips are usually barely edible).  Cliff had the ‘Larney Prawn Bunny Chow’ (R58), he loved it and gave it double thumbs up, I had a taste and concurred.

Bud’s hours are a little unusual, 12 – 8 other than Sunday which is 12 – 3, and they are closed on Mondays.  Now that I can no longer call Durban home, I felt a little smug discovering something so special to share with my local friends.  Next visit we really must try to get to Prawn Shak.
