More often than not, heading for Cape Town from home in Johannesburg (about 1500km) we fall short in the planning department. In December this can lead to our travel weary family arriving at a small town only to find no room at any Inn, B & B or other place of accommodation.
This time on reaching Britstown things started looking bleak again. In the Karoo my preference is to stay on a guest farm of town (the night skies out-of-town are spectacular). I contacted Rietpoort Guesthouse which is 7km outside town but they were fully booked. The very pretty Transkaroo Country Lodge only had a backpackers room available, no use to a family of four. Thankfully there was a room available at Mirage Toeriste Kamers across the road from Transkaroo Country Lodge. The owner Alta was very hospitable.
The guest house offers the basics and met our needs for the night. Our room would benefit from a fresh coat of paint. Fjord is currently very interested in all things astronomical, he loved the duvet covers printed with the planets, I generally prefer white linen. We bought Weetbix and milk in town, the kitchen had a fridge, cutlery and crockery, which meant that we didn’t have to stop for breakfast soon after leaving.
We enjoyed supper at Transkaroo Country Lodge, the courtyard setting is very pretty. The meal portions could have been a bit bigger, and service with a smile was somewhat lacking.
You can contact Mirage Toeriste Kamers on 053 6720310.
How was the stop & Go’s on the N12 this holiday?
On the way from JHB on 27 / 28th none at all, but we went via Kimberley on N17 as we had heard about the stop and Go’s, coming back on 9th plenty from Ct all the way to Richmond where we spent the night on the return trip, we were so put off that we then made our way back to the N17 on dirt roads which took about an hour
Thanks, will keep to the N1 in March then…
