Sutherland in the Karoo is a small town made famous by The South African Large Telescope (SALT) which is the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere. Unfortunately we were not there at the right day or time but very high on our ‘want to do’ list is to return for a visit and tour, tours take place on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.
From street names to accomodation names the theme is all things astronomy related, such as Jupiter guest house and Galaxy. I loved the name of the coffee shop where we stopped for coffee and milktart which is Halley-se-Kom-eet which is Afrikaans word play on Halley’s Comet directly translated as Halley’s Come Eat.
