A black widow spider in my herb box

Strangely I don’t think I’ve ever seen a black widow (button) spider before.  Now I discover that there’s one living in my herb box.  Discovery made when we found it preying on a carpenter bee stuck in it’s web.  Not entirely comfortable with this fact as I now read that their venom can be fatal to children.  PS, the first time I’ve ever uploaded a video to YouTube 🙂  PS the voice in the background is my husband doing some carpentry with his dad

  1. After being bitten by a spider more than once over a period of about 6 months, I kill every spider I see and don’t care for the “save the spider soldiers” or what they think. The spider bites are so painful. I have no idea what spider it was all I know is that your flesh basically rots away and you have a huge hole deep into your flesh that takes forever to heal with antibiotics and other medical care. It just gets deeper and deeper as it putrefies.
I say kill it your children are far more important than a spider.
Well don on the video uploading, it is pretty easy once you get used to it 😉

    • Your bites sound like violin or sac spider, nasty things. I need to get rid of it but can’t spray poison on my herbs. The widow spider’s venom is neurotoxic and has these symptoms Muscle cramps and spasms that start near the bite and then spread and increase in severity for 6 to 12 hours.
      Chills, fever, nausea, or vomiting.
      Sweating.
Severe belly, back, or chest pain.
      Headache.
      Stupor, restlessness, or shock.
      Severe high blood pressure.

      • Very frightening, you can’t take a chance. We know a man who almost lost his leg from a violin spider because he left it too late treating it as a boil with home remedies.
I was also ill with fever aches and headache.
Hope you don’t have more of them.
We also have water spiders in our pond and I spend my life trying to kill them by squashing them with the pebbles. I don’t know whether they are harmless but I stress that our fish will get caught in the webs they spin over the water. Crazy I know but I am attached to my fish 😊

        • I’m going to get husband to conduct a re-location exercise tomorrow (far from my house). I do worry about the danger. I had a violin spider bite a few years ago it was so painful, treated it with bactroban on the instruction of a nurse friend

  2. You are SO CLEVER to download a video onto You Tube. I think the spiders are more scared of us, so fortunately stay out of our way MOSTLY!!
