Book club, 95% friendship & fun, 5% books

Until a group of us started a book club last year I was not sure how they work or what is involved.  I gather that there are 2 types.  In one form all members read the same book at the same time and then discuss it.  The format of ours runs on is that we meet each month at a different members home, the host provides snacks and drinks and buys books which go into a pool.  We each give the next host R100 at the previous meeting.    If a member leaves the group they take the books which they bought.   So far no one has left the group and we have gained a few members.

Sometimes we do something different such as meeting at a restaurant in which case the pool money goes toward the bill.  On one occasion we spent the evening playing truth or dare.  As you may deduce intellectual debate is not a big factor.  For us ladies it’s about time out and companionship with lots of laughter being the primary ingredient.    Last month Evelyns reading from ’50 shades’ was an award winning performance.

The group grew from a group of Clamber Club Mums, I had mentioned that I wanted to join a book club and from this a group formed.   As a stay at home mum I have so little adult interaction and even less social time.  This one night a month is vital to my sanity.

If you are a member of a book club / reading group I would love to hear more about it.

  1. I don’t have one, but I’m thinking I should start one. Is it wrong I’m mostly interested in the food? A snack club just doesn’t have the same tone!
