Last year my son Fjord attended St Raphael’s Pre-Primary school in Boksburg. The school is run by the Boksburg Anglican Church and it was through church that I heard of the school. Cliff and I take the education of our children very seriously and therefore visited 5 pre-primary schools in Boksburg before making a decision. We took Fjord along with us to each one and asked afterward if he liked them. We got the best feeling about St Raphael’s and it was Fjord’s favourite too. The fees at St Raphael’s happened to be the lowest of the schools which we looked at but we did not base our choice on cost.
The school is still relatively new and therefore Gr 00 and Gr 0 are taught by Teacher Barbara in the same classroom. The school takes children from age 2 and older as well as having an aftercare facility. Fjord had never been to a play group or pre-school before, as I do not work I was at home with him until he started at St Raphael’s. We did however attend many mother and child classes together from an early age. He went straight into Teacher Barbara’s class and settled in immediately. His year at the school was a happy one and as parents we felt that he was getting a great start to his education.
This year Fjord moved on to start Grade 1 at a local government primary school. We chose to send him a year earlier than the normal age of 6 turning 7, which makes him the youngest in his class. It has become clear during this year that he received an excellent grounding at St Raphael’s, his reports are the excellent, he gets full marks in his spelling tests and was chosen to take part in the Eisteddfod representing his school for which he got a gold certificate. I have helped out with St Raphael’s office admin this year and have loved the feeling of family at the school.
Today was the final rehearsal at the school for the end of year concert which will be held tomorrow, I took my camera along and had fun enjoying the show and snapping a few pics.
Education is about so much more than scholastic achievement, the part played by values and proper nurturing at pre-primary level has a life long impact on the child.
If you would like to contact the school for more information here are the details.
