Old me in New York

The view of New York about 300m from our AirBnB apartment in New Jersey

The golden rule of momentous holidays is ‘You can’t go back’.  You can’t relive the past.  In New York there were moments when I felt sad, revisiting places associated with giddy highs.  I almost had to convince myself that this was a completely different place to the NY visited more than 2 decades ago.  In most ways it was.  Stifling heat replaced snow;  the skyline is dramatically altered.

Our trip from Ottawa to NY was unique and memorable. Domi and I went by Amtrak train via Montreal. Rail travel is so relaxed and the journey becomes part of the holiday experience.
Our AirBnb in NJ was a great base from which to chill. Adding to the NY experience with a dimension outside of Manhattan
Wow more than 2 decades later The Slaughtered Lamb pub is still in Greenwich village. This left me sad, last time there was profoundly memorable
Where we chose to have supper in Greenwich village. Duncan is skilled at finding places with great food
We used every available means of transport in NY except metered taxis. The ferry was great. The subway is absolutely shoddy. Our Gautrain in Joburg knocks spots off the NY subway
Last time I went up the Empire State building which took my breath away. This time we went to the Top of the Rockefeller which was awesome but hugely expensive (particularly when you convert to rands)
Duncan took us to off Broadway theatre experience. The Imbible Show, a jolly romp with free cocktails

With nostalgia put to bed, special new memories were created with Domi and Duncan.  My mental images have been refreshed.  In just 4 days we crammed in a wealth of experience.
